Engineering Apprentice

Based at Stansted Airport

Salary: £14,237 + benefits

To undertake training as an Advanced Engineering Apprentice by studying at college and in the work place within the Airport Engineering teams

The Role:

To actively seek knowledge about the airport environment in order to enhance learning.

To gain an understanding of the role of the section and department, and to develop an appreciation of how the Engineering function fits into the business.

To develop effective problem-solving skills and an ability to complete tasks using established systems. To be innovative, tackling problems or tasks from a different perspective.

To participate in projects and working parties, and to carry out any other duties that may be outside the standard remit for the purpose of personal development, or as may be reasonably required by the Company.

To ensure compliance with Company Health and Safety Policies and legislation, taking personal responsibility for employing safe working practices to minimise risk to self, work colleagues and customers.

To read and adhere to Safety Notices and Instructions.

Take limited decisions referring to a supervisor, where necessary.

Undertake planned or reactive maintenance work on engineering assets within the following departments:

Tracked Transit System (TTS)

  • Carryout asset surveys and routine maintenance on the Tracked Transit System vehicles and control system.
  • Obtain an understanding of the Office of Rail Regulations that govern the operation and maintenance of the Tracked Transit System.
  • Assist the technicians in the maintenance and reactive fault finding on the railway interlocking and signalling systems.

Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL)

  • Carryout asset surveys and routine maintenance on the runway and taxiway lighting systems.
  • Carryout asset surveys and routine maintenance on the stand floodlighting stand entry guidance systems and aircraft fixed ground electrical power systems (FEGP).
  • Assist the technicians in reactive fault finding on the AGL control systems.

Building Services

  • Carryout asset surveys and routine maintenance on heating and ventilation equipment, electrical distribution, CCTV, security systems lighting and airbridges.
  •  Assist the technicians in reactive response to lift entrapments, escalator stoppages, and fire alarms.

Baggage System

  • Carryout asset surveys and routine maintenance on check-in desks, conveyors, sorters, carousels and x-ray machines.
  • Assist the technicians in reactive fault finding on the baggage control systems, sortation system and SCADA system.

Successful completion of the Apprenticeship may lead to becoming a fully qualified technician.


Must be a team player, able to work successfully with others at all levels by demonstrating effective two-way communication skills with peers, managers and customers.

Have the ability to seek assistance from peers and managers when required.

Must be willing to learn and show practical and innovative methods to problem solving.

Demonstrate good communication skills.

Demonstrate an interest in practical hobbies.

Minimum Requirments 

5 x GCSE's grades A-C (including Maths, English and Science)
